Franchisees made money, suffered losses in IPL- Dalmiya

Franchisees kept pouring money even as state associations hosting IPL matches suffered financial losses to the tune of several crores, former BCCI President Jagmohan Dalmiya alleged during the BCCI's Working Committee meeting in Mumbai. BCCI sources said the Cricket Association of Bengal chief, who spoke for about half an hour in the hour-long meeting in Mumbai on Sunday, detailed the financial bungling that took place as early as in the first edition of the IPL.

Dalmiya alleged that the BCCI paid Rs 20.8 crore as compensation to inaugural IPL champions RR and runners-up CSK when the first Champions League Twenty20 was cancelled owing to the Mumbai terror attacks in 2008. Dalmiya said, at the most Rs 5.1 crore could be paid to each of the two franchisees, provided they could provide evidence of loss suffered, which was admittedly not provided to the Working Committee. The sources said Dalmiya also pointed out that the IPL's Governing Council paid Rs 26.2 crore to the two franchisees but never informed the Working Committee about it.

There was no obligation of BCCI to pay any money to the franchisees on account of cancellation of T20. This fact was also suppressed from the working committee. Thus, the BCCI overpaid Rs 36.8 crore to the two franchisees. It seems that this money belongs to the member associations of the BCCI and has to be recovered. Apart from this, Rs 10.17 crore were paid to the franchisees as pouring rights, which was to be shared on a some ratio with the BCCI.

The IPL is under the Income Tax Department and Enforcement Directorate's scrutiny for alleged corruption in deals. The league's Chairman and Commissioner have already been suspended after being accused to corruption and bid rigging.

5 were arrested for betting on IPL

The city police on Saturday said that they have arrested five cheaters for betting on IPL matches with the recovery of 54 mobile phones and a laptop. Acting on a tip that some bookies were coming to the city for betting on IPL matches, a trap was laid and a car was made patrolled on Ladowali road in the peak hours on Saturday, by Pawan Kumar Rai, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP).

He said personal search of the vehicle led to the recovery of 6 suitcases carrying the mobile phones. The accused were identified as Ajay Kumar, Harish, Ashwani Manchanda, Sudhir Kumar and Sharma and they were immediately arrested and a case has been registered under the Gambling Act.

While Ajay Kumar was the head of the gang, Harish was the computer expert to make record of the bets, adding that other accused used to receive the bets. Rai revealed that recently a network of cheaters was busted in the city and fearing their arrest, the accused shifted their venue of operation to the adjoining district, from where they were coming back at the time of their arrests.

During preliminary interrogation, the accused have revealed some more names of their accomplices and efforts were on to nab them, the DCP said, adding that the accused were being produced before the court to seek their police remand. He did not rule out international connections of the bookies and said exact information on the modus operandi would be known only after their detailed interrogation.

DC stand in DD's path

If T20 is 50% luck, the other 50% is fast boiling. In the race for semifinal places and net-run-rate calculations, two more teams will have the opportunity to bid goodbye to IPL on Sunday. Delhi Daredevils and Deccan Chargers' in IPL 3 league can come to a successful closure if one can win the other at the Kotla. The high security situation in the wake of the Bangalore blasts isn't the only thing giving these two captains nightmares. Gautam Gambhir and Adam Gilchrist's team have 14 points each, and 7 wins from 13 matches, though Delhi's NRR of +0.066 is an important improvement on the Chargers -0.363.

A win for eitherwill mean 16 points and an assured semifinal place. A defeat won't rule them out, though they will be in a really precarious situation as both teams' net run rate could end up being poor compared to other potential semifinalists. Both teams have shared their form has been as unpredictable as the Kotla pitches on offer. Delhi's 6-wicket win at Chennai in their previous game, thanks largely to the efforts of their bowlers. Deccan, on the other hand, on a 4 winning streak and the last win finished by Rohit Sharma on Friday which took them to fourth place.

If Gilchrist’s men lose, they might be up against it and if 4 teams are tied on 14 after the league, their net run rate will let them down. If Delhi loses, they too have to wait on a few results, and particularly hope that Chennai Super Kings lose to Punjab. The curators have worked hard to adorn the track and make it shipshape for the IPL, but Delhi's temperatures now threaten to cast off this veil of normal.

Gambhir, Greg Shipperd, and Anil Kumble have taken turns to comment Kotla's surfaces, which is uneven. Even winning the toss and batting first, as Delhi found out against Kings XI a week back, is no guarantee of success. Delhi's indifferent top-order performances, criticized throughout the season, have to be in better form.

CSK face tricky KXIP

With one team going all out for victory and the other looking forward to finish their sorry campaign in IPL 3 on a high note, the match between Chennai Super Kings and Kings XI Punjab at HPCA stadium on Sunday afternoon surely has a lot to offer to the Indian Premier League cricket game’s starved fans of this region.

With 12 points from 13 matches, Chennai Super Kings have to win and hope that other things fall into their place. However, with the wicket not being an easy one, Chennai Super Kings will have to lift their game, as Kings XI Punjab would love to finish their journey of this tournaments by denying their opponents against whom they have lost four out of their five IPL encounters with a chance to sneak into the last four stage.

The last time the teams clashed, the match went to the Super over before Kings pulled off a thriller. So, one can expect a tight finish on Sunday too. CSK, who reached on Saturday afternoon and didn't turn up for a practice session, need their batsmen to fire. CSK batsmen were expected to show their good performance and to defend the spinning bowlers of Kings XI Punjab team.

I'm still open for a role - Wright

The former India coach John Wright remains hopeful of getting a role with an Indian Premier League side in future. Earlier this year, speculation was raised that the former New Zealand batsman would replace John Buchanan as KKR coach. Wright too admitted that he had serious discussions with the Kolkata team management on the matter but eventually it did not materialize. However, with two new teams Kochi and Pune and joining the IPL from next year, Wright is keeping his hopes high.

Wright said it would be an exciting challenge but who knows what will happen in future. He has coached India for 5 years and knows the structure of the game. He still misses the excitement which is associated with Indian cricket. He still associated with coaching and he coaches New Zealand 'A' team. But above all as a coach he should have the confidence of producing a good team. He added that he had good talks with KKR people but it did not go that far.

Talking about the Twenty20 World Cup starting from April 28 in the West Indies, Wright feels the teams which would seize early momentum in the tournament will be in an advantageous position in the tournament. However, he refused to handpick any particular team as the favourite to lift the title but said the team which is fresh and free of injuries would stand a good chance in the event.

Wright, who coached India from 2000 to 2005 said he think it is going to be like the last Twenty20 World Cup. But it's really very difficult to predict a winner in Twenty20 matches.

Happy to miss IPL - Broad

On Thursday Stuart Broad capped by being named one of Wisden's cricketers of the year and said he was happy to miss out on the IPL to ensure he remains in the best shape for England. Having lost 4kg and picked up a few aches during England's tour to Bangladesh , he took a few weeks off to recover. He said he have been in the gym, trying to put a bit weight back on and just easing the aches and pains. He said playing for England is the highlight of his career and he needed a couple of weeks' rest before the Twenty20 World Cup.

Andrew Flintoff and Pietersen criticised after picking up injuries in the IPL. Broad, so slim now that he would barely cover all three stumps if he stood in front of them. A couple of hundred souls felt chilly spring wind on Thursday to watch the match between Middlesex and Glamorgan, a far cry from the mayhem of the IPL League where most of the world's leading players are showing their short-game talents before the Twenty20 World Cup in the West Indies which is to be starts in two weeks.

Broad accepted that England's players could do with sharpening their skills but said he was confident they could still be competitive despite their lack of practice. The IPL is something he would like to do in the future, it's a fantastic tournament. They do need to develop as a Twenty20 team and players. They have got a couple of warm-up games before the tournament and it would probably have been better to have played a few more but we've had a bit of rest and I certainly feel better for that.

England wicketkeeper Matt Prior, swing bowler Graham Onions and Australian batsmen Michael Clarke completed the honoured on Wednesday. Broad told it was a fantastic evening, going up and getting the award with such illustrious people and past winners in the room. It was a huge honor to get the leather book with my name on, you can only win it once and nobody can take that away. He was also very proud to have four England players in the five. That really shows how far they have come as a team.

Explosion delayed RCB & MI match

The Indian Premier League match between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Mumbai Indians has been delayed due to two bomb explosions took place outside the Chinnaswamy stadium in Bangalore on Saturday. The Sachin Tendulkar led team was to take on hosts Bangalore in the IPL encounter which was scheduled to start at 4pm. The toss which took place at 3:30pm has also been delayed.

Two explosions have been heard outside the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore. There are reports said that six to eight people have been injured. Those blasts are of low intensity, according to the police and one security guard has been injured seriously in the explosion.

Sudhakar Rao, the assistant secretary of the Karnataka Cricket Association (KCA), said that it's a minor incident in the generator room and there is no need to worry about anything. They had a delayed start though may be of 10-15 minutes. The cause of the blast is being ascertained till now as both the teams were inside the stadium when the blast occurred.

Mumbai Indians have already qualified for the semifinals with 18 points from 12 matches, Bangalore, with 14 points under their tally from 13 games, would have to ensure that they don't slip up at the doorstep of what would be their second straight semifinals in the cash-awash league.

DD & DC cross swords

Delhi Daredevils and Deccan Chargers will clash in a fate-deciding Indian Premier League match on Sunday, the winners of which would surely earn a semifinal spot. Both the teams have 14 points but the hosts are sitting third in the points table by virtue of their better net run-rate, which will definitely come into play when calculations are done to determine the final fours. None of the two teams would like to leave its fate on mathematical equations and would go for the kill. The fans can look forward to a good contest between Deccan's strong batting and Delhi's bowling.

Strategizing for the match would certainly be a headache due to the uncertain nature of the Ferozshah Kotla strip. Batting won't be easy as uneven bounce makes the more difficult. So, both the teams will have to play carefully and field best. The rivals are coming into the clash with convincing wins but the defending champions are peaking just at the right time and are in scorching form with four wins in a row.

Delhi have their task cut out as Deccan's young players like Rohit Sharma and Suman, guarding the middle-order, have the capability of defending any attack. Together with Symonds both Rohit and Suman have played their stunning comeback. The way Rohit guided his team to win over Kings XI Punjab and his visitors would hope he will again rise to occasion. Delhi's worry is indifferent form of their top order batsmen particularly Virender Sehwag.

He has not done much damage so far and if he gets going, nothing could be better than that for Delhi. Gautam Gambhir has played a vital role in keeping the team in contention and the youngster would be aiming to see his team through on Sunday. By looking at present form, Delhi's chances rest on a good show by their bowlers, especially fast bowlers Dirk and Nehra and Mishra.
