W.Indies looks Gayle force in Ireland opener

West Indies captain Chris Gayle struck Australia fast bowler Brett Lee for 27 runs in one over at last year's World T20 so Ireland's attack could be forgiven for fearing the worst. West Indies face Ireland, looking for success, on the first day of this year's World Twenty20 on Friday. Gayle, whose 117 against South Africa in the inaugural 2007 edition remains the only century at a World Twenty20. This month the West Indies beat Ireland by 6 wickets in a ODI in Jamaica but trying to apply conclusions from other forms of cricket to T20 is with risk.

At last year's World T20 they beat Bangladesh and at the 2007 World Cup in the Caribbean they knocked Pakistan out of the tournament. The defeat on Friday would lead to more frustration amongst their fans who recently saw the team beaten by Zimbabwe in a ODI, although the West Indies did go on to win that series. He said they have a very good chance of winning this competition and they are at home and that gives them an advantage.

It was in 1969 that Ireland made the cricket world sit up and take notice by dismissing the touring West Indies for just 25 on what remains one of the most famous days in Irish cricket history. Now Ireland are coached by a former West Indies batsman Phil Simmons and he reckons the compressed nature of T20 makes upsets more likely. Simmons said, he think it's easier to pull off a shock in T20 because recovery time is less than in 50 overs. They have played that little bit more Twenty20 than they had going into the last World Cup, so they are slightly wiser about T20 cricket.

South Africa as underdogs

South Africa will go into the World Twenty20 in the West Indies without being burdened by the expectations of their supporters. Graeme Smith's team will be underdogs as they make another attempt to win an ICC global event. South Africa have coach van Zyl, a captain recovering from injury and a team whose players were starring during the IPL. With the exception of fast bowler Dale Steyn and all-rounders Kallis and Albie Morkel, South Africa's leading bowlers spent most of their time in India.

As spin likely to be an important factor, Smith admitted it was disappointing that Merwe played in only one game and off-spinner Johan Botha did not get on the field. The only South African batsman to perform consistently throughout the IPL was Kallis, for the RCB. Smith suffered a broken finger while fielding in the IPL and picked up bat again on April 14. They have only got five or six days to get themselves ready for the tournament and they got to knuckle down.

South Africa will not be alone, in having to rush their preparation, with the tournament starting just five days after the IPL final. South Africa have been beaten semi-finalists in seven ICC events going back to the 1992 World Cup, but reached only one final, in 1998. South Africa have the potential to be competitive in the West Indies, where they will play group matches against India in St. Lucia and newcomer Afghanistan in Barbados. A headache will be to decide which two of Smith, Kallis, Bosman and Gibbs should open the batting. Another decision will be whether to play both spinners, Van der Merwe and Botha.

Sehwag's absence won't be loss - Manjrekar

The former Test batsman Sanjay Manjrekar feels Sehwag's absence will not affect India's chances in the T20 World Cup as they have enough back-up to fill up place. Sehwag was dropped due to a shoulder injury during the Indian Premier League and was replaced by Tamil Nadu opener Murali Vijay, who had a successful performance with the Chennai Super Kings. He added the impact that Sehwag makes in Test cricket is far greater than the impact he makes at the T20 level. He is confident India will be able to bear his loss.

Interestingly, Sehwag was injured during the 2009 World Cup held in England. Although he travelled with the team, Sehwag did not play a game. Manjrekar said, he think the selectors went for a top order batsman and the idea was to replace an opener with someone who bats at the top of the order. He has been batting at number three and opening as well. Manjrekar feels India's bench strength is becoming very powerful and IPL has played a major role in this direction.

The great thing about the IPL is that it threw up a lot of talent that India could use in T20. Somebody like Uthappa was a revelation. Ojha and Amit Mishra did well too. I think the wealth of T20 talent is growing because of the IPL. He said it's surely time to test their bench strength at the highest level because India must find alternatives to the likes of Sehwag, Tendulkar, Dravid and Zaheer Khan as soon as possible.

Pakistan restore pride against Bangladesh

Pakistan looks to bounce back from a warm-up loss to Zimbabwe when they begin the defence of their World Twenty20 title against Bangladesh on Saturday. It says much about what has happened to Pakistan cricket since they beat Sri Lanka in the 2009 World Twenty20 final and a defeat by Bangladesh this weekend is thinkable.

Against Zimbabwe, Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi and Abdul Razzaq scored just 9 runs between them. Failing in a warm-up match is no barrier to the coming matches, but Pakistan have lost the influence of Younus Khan, their captain of last year's World Twenty20. He was one of several players punished after the team's poor performance in tours of Australia, New Zealand and the UAE.

The defeat has meant they have come to the Caribbean without Shoaib Malik, newly married to Indian tennis star Sania Mirza, and Rana Hasan, both banned for a year. The whole expectations is on Afridi and Razzaq. Afridi did at least take 4 wickets against Zimbabwe and cause batting collapses in this format.

Wasim said, they need someone like Afridi as captain in Twenty20 cricket, who has aggression needed in a leader and will always sparkle. A 7-wicket loss to England in a warm-up in Barbados on Wednesday did little for Bangladesh's hopes of beating either Pakistan or Australia and so qualifying for the second round. But Bangladesh once beat Australia in a ODI in Cardiff and if captain Shakib Al Hasan or Mohammad Ashraful come good with the bat, another shock could be in sight.

Pakistan humbled by Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe defending World Twenty20 champions Pakistan with a 12-run win in their final warm-up at St. Lucia before the 2010 tournament on Friday. Zimbabwe, who defeated Australia by 1-run earlier in the week, made 143/7 from their 20 overs with big hit by Elton smashing 49 not out in 35 balls to rescue his team from 64/5 in the 12th over.

Kamran Akmal hit 37 in 27 balls as Pakistan started their play, but they were in deep trouble at 67/ 5 after 10 overs. Fawad Alam and Misbah-ul-Haq added 51 in 7th over for the 6th wicket, before spinner Utseya turned the game around for the Africans, getting rid of both men on his way to figures of 4 for 15 in four overs.

Pakistan finished on 131 with Elton, claiming 3 for 16 in 3 overs. Pakistan begin their campaign on Saturday against Bangladesh in St. Lucia while Zimbabwe start against Sri Lanka in Guyana on Monday. In Thursday's other warm-ups, Australia recovered from their defeat to Zimbabwe by crushing them by 101 runs at St. Lucia.

David Warner hit 51, as his second half-century, and David Hussey made 49 as Australia made 189/8 in their 20 overs before they were dismissed for just 88. Australia play their first group match against Pakistan in St. Lucia on Sunday. At Barbados, England defeated South Africa by 5 wickets. England face West Indies in Guayna on Monday while South Africa start against India in St. Lucia on Sunday.

No favourites in T20 World Cup

The 17-day tournament, which is expected to see high-voltage competition, begins with a double-header at Guyana National Stadium, with New Zealand taking on Sri Lanka in the opener, followed by a match between West Indies and Ireland under lights. Pakistan have the best track record in Twenty20 World Cup, having reached the final in the inaugural event in 2007 in South Africa and claiming the title in the second edition last year in England. They have the best winning percentage with 22 wins, 7 losses in 30 matches.

India, who lifted the trophy in 2007, has become the home of Twenty20 cricket with a hugely successful IPL. Though India suffered jolt by the unavailability of Virender Sehwag due to injury, they would be banking on Dhoni's captaincy. India will begin their campaign against Afghanistan on Saturday at St. Lucia. India would seek lessons from history as they had early exit after losing to Bangladesh in the 50-over World Cup in the Caribbean islands 3 years ago.

The West Indies have two of the world cricket's most dangerous players in captain Chris Gayle and Kieron Pollard who have shown their prowess in the IPL 3 for Kolkata Knight Riders and Mumbai Indians respectively. Besides the home advantage and support, they will also be strengthened by the return of bowler Taylor and batsman Ramanaresh Sarwan. Sri Lanka, who were the losing finalists in the 50-over World Cup 3 years ago, have a team with many of their players having IPL experience. This time, the organisers are embracing the mood and music that has typified Caribbean cricket for decades and have lowered ticket prices to ensure more spectators.

IT dept gets Rs 400 crore as tax from IPL3

The Income Tax department probing on alleged financial irregularities in the IPL has collected duty tax of nearly Rs 400 crore from the third edition of the T20 tournament. The department has accrued the amount as Tax Deducted at Source (TDS) from the remuneration paid to players, umpires, coaches, commentators and from payment of overseas publicity rights. IT authorities are putting together the TDS collections as they are collecting information from several offices across the country where the IPL franchises are registered.

The IT department is currently not only probing the source of money into the tournament but is also investigating the transactions relating to the Indian Premier League including the flow of money from offshore destinations into the tournament. After the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) were crowned winners of the IPL in Mumbai on April 25, the department started collecting the taxes under the TDS category paid by the various franchises to professionals and professional services.

The department had collected documents related to bidding, payment of taxes and various other financial details during its countrywide survey operations on various IPL franchises, with such operation being conducted at the BCCI and IPL premises including at the office of former IPL Commissioner Lalit Modi on April 15. The IT department in Mumbai has created special officers to monitor the IPL as the metropolis hosts the IPL marketing and advertising offices.

India, Afghan join hands in polio campaign

Indian and Afghanistan cricketers joined the forces in an United Nations initiative with Suresh Raina and Nawroz Mangal exchanging the "Bowl Out Polio" cricket bats as a regional solidarity towards the elimination of the polio virus from the neighbouring countries. While most of the countries in world has been polio free for years, India, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Nigeria are the only four countries that have never stopped the polio virus transmission.

Raina said it is their obligation as athletes to make sure every child has the opportunity to run and to play and they were happy to come together with the Afghanistan team for this important cause of awareness too. As long as India and Afghanistan continue to see the polio transmission, their neighbours are at high risk of reinfection.

India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni said that, if they do not end polio in India, the rest of the world will suffer. He added saying that, every parent must vaccinate their children regardless of travel schedules, work or anything else in their busy scheduled lives. He quoted that, nothing is more important than children's future.

India thrash Afghan by 7 wickets

India got their Twenty20 World Cup campaign with awesome start by registering a 7-wicket victory against Afghanistan in their Group C clash at Beausejour Stadium in St Lucia on Saturday. Murali Vijay smashed 3 sixes and 2 fours and scored 48 in 46-balls as India chased down the victory target of 116 runs with 5.1 overs to spare. Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni smashed 2 consecutive sixes and finished the match early.

India took off with a poor start in their run chase losing Gautam Gambhir in the 3rd over as Dawlat Ahmadzai had caught by Mohammad Nabi in the covers. Samiullah Shinwari trapped Suresh Raina plumb in front of the wicket to reduce India to 46/2. Ashish Nehra took 3 wickets as India restricted Afghanistan to 115/8.

The only bright spot in the Afghanistan innings was the 68 run partnership between Noor Ali with 50 and Asghar Stanikzai with 30. Apart from these two, none of the other Afghanistan managed to reach double figures. Nehra got into the act when he had both Karm Sadiq and Mohammad Shahzad caught behind by Dhoni in successive overs. Jadeja then struck in his first over when he had Afghanistan captain Nawroz Mangal caught by Gautam Gambhir to reduce Afghans to 29/3.

In the next overs, Praveen Kumar dismissed Stanikzai and Mohammad Nabi in successive deliveries to reduce Afghanistan to 97/6. Samiullah Shinwari was then run out and in the last over Zaheer Khan had Hamid Hassan caught by Nehra Afghanistan managed to reach 115/8.

Hauritz gets Afridi's backing

Nathan Hauritz found an unlikely a friendly association in Pakistan skipper Shahid Afridi, who said dropping the spinner could prove costly for Australia. Australia play their opening match of the World Twenty20 against defending champions Pakistan on Sunday. Hauritz did not take a wicket in two practice games at Beausejour Cricket Ground, where the pitch is slow and favourable to turn, and looks likely to miss out for the crucial match against Afridi's team.

The chairman of selectors Andrew Hilditch also indicated that all-rounder Steve Smith and part time bowlers Michael Clarke and David Hussey could give the team with adequate cover. He said that he think Australia should go with their regular spinners on this track, it's not easy to bowl spin, and they should be very focused.

He said he is not saying it's totally a spinning track, if they have got a good experienced spinner they know how to bowl and where to bowl. He think Hauritz been doing well for the last couple of months and thinks on this type of track he will be very difficult for the opposition.Pakistan will field at least two spinners and two part timers while Bangladesh, the other team in Australia's group, will also rely on spinners to win through to the super eight stage.

Franchisees made money, suffered losses in IPL- Dalmiya

Franchisees kept pouring money even as state associations hosting IPL matches suffered financial losses to the tune of several crores, former BCCI President Jagmohan Dalmiya alleged during the BCCI's Working Committee meeting in Mumbai. BCCI sources said the Cricket Association of Bengal chief, who spoke for about half an hour in the hour-long meeting in Mumbai on Sunday, detailed the financial bungling that took place as early as in the first edition of the IPL.

Dalmiya alleged that the BCCI paid Rs 20.8 crore as compensation to inaugural IPL champions RR and runners-up CSK when the first Champions League Twenty20 was cancelled owing to the Mumbai terror attacks in 2008. Dalmiya said, at the most Rs 5.1 crore could be paid to each of the two franchisees, provided they could provide evidence of loss suffered, which was admittedly not provided to the Working Committee. The sources said Dalmiya also pointed out that the IPL's Governing Council paid Rs 26.2 crore to the two franchisees but never informed the Working Committee about it.

There was no obligation of BCCI to pay any money to the franchisees on account of cancellation of T20. This fact was also suppressed from the working committee. Thus, the BCCI overpaid Rs 36.8 crore to the two franchisees. It seems that this money belongs to the member associations of the BCCI and has to be recovered. Apart from this, Rs 10.17 crore were paid to the franchisees as pouring rights, which was to be shared on a some ratio with the BCCI.

The IPL is under the Income Tax Department and Enforcement Directorate's scrutiny for alleged corruption in deals. The league's Chairman and Commissioner have already been suspended after being accused to corruption and bid rigging.

Exclusion of Pak players was preplanned - Razzaq

The exclusion of Pakistani cricketers from this year's Indian Premier League tournament was a pre-plan, according to all-rounder Abdul Razzaq. Razzaq pointed to his own example as proof that the franchises were under instructions not to bid on any Pakistani players. Razzaq said he have signed a contract with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in August 2009 so he was already signed up to an IPL team before the 2010 IPL auction took place.

The presence was Pakistani all rounder in the IPL3 was problematic for those who wanted to ensure that no players from Pakistan took part. Razzaq was already under contract and they needed to find a way around this. So they convinced him to relinquish his contract with Kolkata and submit his name for the auction. Though he had already signed for Kolkata but they told him they wanted to add his name to the auction list. They said that he would be worth a lot more at auction than his current contract. So he signed a waiver on Kolkata contract and they got what they wanted.

Razzaq said it was a plan from the start, which they didn't allow any franchises to bid on Pakistani players. But they can't hide these things in the modern world; it's an open secret that this was a political decision from the Indian government. Razzaq said it's a shame that the world of sports is being dragged into politics because sport has the power to become a unifying force.

Collingwood calls for change to rain rules

Frustrated England captain Paul Collingwood demanded change to the rain-affected games are decided after his team lost to West Indies in their shortened Twenty20 World Cup game on Monday. England batted superbly for a score of 191/5 from their 20 overs but a rain delay meant West Indies won by scoring just 60/2 from 5.5 overs. He said it is very frustrating, and 95% of the time they are going to win with a score of 191 but the Duckworth-Lewis method somehow changed that. The Duckworth-Lewis method is the established calculation system for reducing a target total in a game affected by rain delays in one-day games.

In the Twenty20 version of the game a match can have a result after five overs in an innings and the shorter spans can shift the balance heavily in favour of the team batting second. Collingwood said on Monday's game, where England lost scoring more than three times as many runs as their opponents, showed the system did not work in the shortest format. There is a major problem with Duckworth-Lewis for this form of the game.

West Indies captain Chris Gayle said he agreed with Collingwood that a review was needed. It was unfortunate for England to lose in this manner. He added it is something they need to address so it can be even for both teams. The day's other game was also decided after a rain-delay calculation. Sri Lanka batted first and made 173/7 while Zimbabwe made 29/1 from five overs before the rain came down.

Had Zimbabwe managed just 15 more runs in those opening overs they would have beaten Sri Lanka and eliminated them from the tournament. They knew that the weather was going to play a part and that 5 five could play a part so they decided to go hard. England can still make it to the Super Eight stage of the competition if they beat Ireland on Tuesday.

A road map for IPL - Warne

RR Shane Warne has created a road map for IPL based on total transparency which conceive an image of player transfer window and for fielding an extra foreign player during the tournament. Warne has put together 6 major ideas as how the IPL should move ahead in future since the current players contracts will expire before the 2011 season. He suggested that all players be put up for auction and the original franchises be allowed to buy them back, besides making suggestions on umpires and bowling laws and salary of captains.

He said, no retention of players is a must to achieve total transparency in regards to the salary. It will increase the creditability of the IPL as the players final price will be established at the auction, whatever that may be. The player can then be offered back to their original franchise for an extra $50,000. If the player is important to the franchise, the extra $50,000 will be paid to the player to keep him at the franchise.

He added all players bought at the auction should continue to receive 3 year contract for the auction value. Warne also suggested raise in the salary from $7 million to $9 million. If current captains cannot agree to a deal, he can potentially move to a new franchise as their captain. This will allow for owners, coaches and the captain to make their plans and strategies well before auction time.

Warne believes all franchises should be allowed three 'super rounds', where they can field five foreign players instead of four and suggested a player's trade window. During the trade period the franchises could be allowed 1 trade each, however, it would not be compulsory.
